Anxiety
Depression
ADHD
Anxiety is a natural human response that helps us stay alert to potential problems or dangers—essentially, it's our body's alarm system for uncertain situations. However, when this feeling escalates beyond typical worry and turns into persistent nervousness that causes ongoing discomfort and stress, it becomes a problem. This type of anxiety can manifest through symptoms like a racing heart, a flood of anxious thoughts, and a tightness in the chest—indicators that anxiety is impacting you more than it should. It can feel as though you’re perpetually on edge, haunted by a sense of impending doom even when everything seems to be going well. Anxiety disorders encompass various mental health conditions, each with its own distinct causes and manifestations in our lives. In the whirlwind of today’s society, anxiety can often feel like an uninvited guest that overstays its welcome, affecting our peace of mind and overall well-being. At Domenic Psychiatry, we understand the profound impact anxiety can have on your life, and we are here to offer a guiding hand through your journey to tranquility. Whether you’re dealing with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic attacks, or any other form of anxiety, our goal is to empower you with the tools and insights needed for lasting change.
Depression is a serious mental health condition characterized by persistent sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities. Unlike temporary feelings of sadness, depression significantly impacts daily functioning and includes emotional symptoms like feelings of worthlessness, physical symptoms such as fatigue and changes in appetite, and cognitive symptoms like difficulty concentrating. It can stem from biological, genetic, environmental, and psychological factors, and often arises in the late teens to mid-20s. Depression is more prevalent in women, with about one-third experiencing a major depressive episode in their lifetime, and it has a 40% heritability rate among first-degree relatives. Treatment options include psychotherapy, medications, and lifestyle changes, and early intervention is crucial for better outcomes. If you or someone you know may be experiencing depression, seeking professional help promptly is essential. At Domenic Psychiatry, we’re dedicated to blending evidence-based treatment methods with a personalized approach to promote healing and growth. Whether you're struggling with ongoing sadness, a diminished interest in activities you once loved, or feeling overwhelmed by life's challenges, our aim is to provide you with the tools and strategies necessary to restore your joy, energy, and sense of purpose.
OCD
Bipolar Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than a preference for cleanliness or organization. It involves obsessions, which are intrusive and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant distress, and compulsions, which are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety from these obsessions. These compulsions, such as hand washing, checking, and counting, can severely disrupt daily activities and social interactions. While many people experience distressing thoughts or repetitive behaviors, they do not typically disrupt daily life as they do for those with OCD. At Domenic Psychiatry, we use a comprehensive treatment approach to effectively manage OCD, aiming to enhance the quality of life for our patients by addressing the disorder from multiple angles.
Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, involves dramatic mood swings between emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and profound lows (depression). These extreme mood shifts affect sleep, energy, thinking, and judgment, often disrupting daily life and relationships. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience significant emotional changes during distinct mood episodes, including unusually elevated or irritable moods and deep, persistent sadness. Despite these challenges, people with bipolar disorder also have periods of stable, neutral mood. With appropriate treatment, they can manage the condition effectively and lead rewarding, productive lives. Navigating the emotional and energy fluctuations associated with Bipolar Disorder can be difficult, but you don't have to do it alone. At Domenic Psychiatry, we offer compassionate, personalized services aimed at stabilizing mood swings, enhancing well-being, and empowering those living with Bipolar Disorder. Let Domenic Psychiatry support you on your journey to wellness and recovery, providing the tools and assistance needed to thrive despite the challenges of Bipolar Disorder.
IEP's and 504's
School Clearance
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults, characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These symptoms can significantly impact daily functioning, leading to challenges in academic, occupational, and social settings. ADHD also affects executive functioning, making tasks like planning, prioritizing, and initiating activities more difficult. While the exact causes of ADHD are not fully understood, research suggests that genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors contribute to its development. Treatment typically involves a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes, which can help manage symptoms and improve functioning. We recognize the unique challenges and strengths associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and are committed to providing personalized, effective care tailored to each individual's needs. As an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider, MaryAnna employs a comprehensive approach to treatment, integrating evidence-based therapies with practical strategies to manage symptoms, improve focus, and enhance overall well-being.
PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) arises after individuals experience or witness overwhelming traumatic events, leading to lasting mental, emotional, and physical challenges. Common symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and intrusive thoughts about the trauma. While many people can eventually cope with and recover from trauma, those whose symptoms persist for months or years may experience significant disruption in daily life. Domenic Psychiatry offers compassionate support and tailored treatments to help individuals manage PTSD symptoms and restore their quality of life.
Some children require very particular styles of education or need extra assistance to do well in traditional educational environments. For these children, an evaluation for both IEPs and 504 plans will provide insight into the type of assistance they need for teachers and staff. IEP stands for “Individualized Education Program.” These programs are designed to offer a solution to students who struggle in traditional learning environments due to learning disabilities. There are 13 specific disabilities outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that qualify a student for an IEP. Unlike IEPs, 504 plans have no specific stipulations on the type of disability that qualifies a student for participation in the program. Anything that affects an individual’s ability to learn, even if it’s not one of the 13 disabilities recognized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, is covered under 504s. This is not an exhaustive list, but students who may be considered for a 504 plan could include those with health impairments, ADD/ADHD, HIV/AIDS, alcohol/substance abusers, students with temporary physical disabilities or mental health issues, and students returning to school post-operative. After consultation, a recommendation on the types of allowances to provide the students is presented to the school. Domenic Psychiatry is proud to provide ongoing support for families and students involved with a 504 plan. The 504 Plan developed for any given student MUST address services needed to access and participate in the learning process offered to grade-appropriate peers.
Sometimes, a child may make a threat to harm themself or others. A staff may discover that a student injured themselves. On rare occasions, a child may even harm themself or hurt people at the school. When this occurs, the school is required to suspend the child from school immediately, pending psychiatric clearance to formally rule out risk of harm to self or others, in order for a student to return to school. Some schools may tell you to take your child to the nearest emergency room. This can be extremely traumatic for a child. Risk assessment and crisis intervention are not synonymous with emergency room (ER) screening or hospitalization. Not all risk assessments and/or students identified in acute crisis require a referral to the local emergency room or psychiatric facility. In fact, on the contrary, referrals to the ER should be considered the most restrictive intervention within the student’s environment and considered only in cases of high risk and imminent danger. The purpose of the clearance letter is to acknowledge that the student of concern can return to school with written documentation by a trained evaluator that confirms said student does not present as a danger to his/her/themselves. It is not expected, nor is it appropriate, to include diagnostic information or clinical disposition. At Domenic Psychiatry, we understand how scary this time is for your child and your family. We want to help your child to return to school as soon as they are safe to do so.
